The Issue of Racism in Europe Today

Racism is something that is being fought in most countries around the world but it still exists because it exists with individuals, and how they are raised. Some countries are significantly better than others at being tolerate to those that are different where as in some countries there are huge problems where it isn’t just the public but the government may be turning a blind eye as well. For Europe the majority of the racism is in the Eastern European countries such as the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Italy, and more. But thanks to initiatives that many Europeans countries have implemented the hate crimes for many countries are going down but not all of them. As more and more people are moving around Europe it is bringing some of the hate to different countries so countries such as Finland are experiencing an increase in hate crime as there is more people that are considered outsiders by the nationals there. Finland reported their hate crimes over several years have went up by one thousand a year which is huge number.

Causes of Racism in Europe

For other countries it isn’t all outsiders that may experience racism as statistically the majority of the racism found in Europe is due to ethnic origins including religion. For countries such as France the majority of the population views it as bad for those of Muslim origin to move into the country. Other countries may still be fighting sentiments that were developed a long time ago leaving bitterness in much of the public’s heart such as Germany as even after they lost the world war and the Jews were freed they were still great discriminated against for years which is something Germany is still getting past. For a lot of the countries experiencing an increase of both immigration, and racism one must question if there is another driving factor?

Hidden Reasons for Racism

That driving factor could very well be money as poor nationals having a hard time finding work but seeing those that immigrated to the country with jobs may feel there is favoritism simply for the sake of acting tolerant; thus in the minds of those people it would be the immigrants taking jobs from them in a sense. In many of these countries it drives a force and a kind of racism that is simply there because they need money as well and if there are not enough jobs for the people already in the country why should those just moving to the country find them so easily? The European poor that are out of work and truly struggling don’t need handouts they a job where they can work and support their families to provide them with basic essentials for living.

Doing More than Banning Racism

There is no excuse for racism but in order for a government to attempt to correct the wrongs being done by its’ public it’s important to understand why that racism exists. Any government can make laws against racism but that doesn’t change the heart of the public who are trying to find work or don’t want their country being taken by another nationality, and even though they be irrational fears, they exist and are important to realize so that the public can be assured new people are not going to replace their country. Their country is simply opening its arms to learn of new cultures, to allow new cultures to learn and assimilate with them so ultimately they can all find common ground together.

Anti-Semitism in Europe Today

Anti- Semitism is Europe was at its highest during the days of Hitler something that no one will forget as it was a hideous tragedy in European history. Since that time things have come a long way in the form of tolerance, or so it seemed. The question today is- are those feelings of hate arising again? In countries like France Jews are getting murdered, synagogues attacked causing many Jews to be concerned for their safety often moving out of the countries in which this is the highest. But on the down side some see the immigration due to fear possibly only making matters worse and bringing out anti- Semitic views to the surface where they were once hidden.

Increasing Anti- Semitic Incidents

In response to the attacks on Jews countries all across Europe have spoken out making it clear that any hate crimes against Jews or anyone else won’t be tolerated. This is bringing the problem to attention in the form of the news in many of these European countries causing more people to stand up and say that these actions are not ok. That is great news that it seems through polls taken that right now those that have anti- Semitic views are actually a very small portion of the population in Europe. But what many experts fear is that people are simply hiding their bias and true feelings in the light of governments standing up for tolerance and supporting the Jewish people. Thus many feel that when the violence ends the anti- Semitic views will simply return. This isn’t to say that Europe hasn’t come a long way as it has in history but the Jewish people should not feel threatened, or that they have to hide being Jewish in their day to day life. Nor should they fear attacks from people even if it is a small portion of the community that both feels that way, and acts out against the Jewish people.

Focus

Right now the governments must first focus on assuring the Jewish that they are safe and do not have to worry about history repeating itself, or being attacked in any way over their faith. But it can’t end there as there have to be movements to change the attitudes of people to the point no one has to live in fear or experience bias for being Jewish. Only when attitudes change will the violence cease to exist in these European countries. By making an effort for everyone to understand one another and see each other as people, and respect each other for their choice of faith like with everything else peace can start to happen. Many problems people have said in polls that they had towards the Jewish is that they felt the Jewish people believe they are better than everyone else which is a common theme for anyone with anti- Semitic views. That topic is something that should be discussed in order to have it set straight so people can move on instead of moving to violence where they shouldn’t be any.
